ELEMENTS 2.0
Every flavour is big and bold with its own place, each one complementing the other. The extended fermentation of up to 115 hours introduced some extra tropical fruit notes which perfectly balanced with the soft smokiness of the peat.
On the nose, you’ll notice intensity of the peat smoke and green apple, followed by a warmth of ginger. More smoke comes when you taste, along with runny honey, cream soda and vanilla. The long and lingering finish “leaves smokiness sitting like a blanket”, with a hint of red berries.
You know we don’t like to follow the crowd, so rather than focus entirely on cask finishes or different styles to bring out, the Elements Series allows us to explore how we can engineer different flavours.
Distilled during a particularly frosty January, Elements 2.0 takes fermentation beyond our standard of 55 hours and experimented with of a range of longer fermentations, all the way up to 115 hours.
The effect of this longer fermentation period is an intensity of flavour. After around 65 hours, a secondary fermentation begins to kick in inside the washback and this reintroduces some more tropical flavours, while retaining the classic Laphroaig character we all know and love.
Your first taste of 2.0 will bring those strong flavours together as well as more smoke, gooseberries, with some nuttiness and vanilla. At the end, you get lingering red berries and a powerful, long smoky finish.
Elements 2.0 Faq
Yes. Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is a limited-edition Scotch release in our experimental Elements series. It was created to explore the flavour impact of extended fermentation, offering a bold, non-chill filtered expression of Laphroaig with extra tropical fruit notes, soft peat smoke, and a long, warming finish.
Each release in the Elements series explores a different part of our Scotch whisky-making process. Elements 1.0 looked at innovation in mashing and fermentation, while Elements 2.0 focuses on extended fermentation of up to 115 hours. Rather than being better or stronger than another chapter, Elements 2.0 shows a different side of Laphroaig, bringing fruit, sweetness, soft smoke, and layered complexity into balance.
Elements 2.0 is still unmistakably Laphroaig, but it brings an extra dimension to our classic peated whisky style. The extended fermentation introduces more tropical fruit notes, balancing the peat with green apple, runny honey, cream soda, vanilla, and a softer smokiness. It keeps the bold Islay character you know, while revealing a fruitier, more layered side of the whisky distillery.
Laphroaig Elements 2.0 was awarded Whisky of the Year 2024 by The Whisky Advocate for the way it pushes our process while staying true to our character. Its extended fermentation brings every flavour into its own place, with fruit, sweetness, salt, and smoke working together. The result is bold, balanced, and distinctly Laphroaig.
If you enjoy the full, uncompromising character of Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength, Elements 2.0 brings a different kind of intensity. Where 10 Year Cask Strength is powerful, direct, and shaped by cask strength depth, Elements 2.0 is shaped by extended fermentation of up to 115 hours. That longer fermentation brings brighter fruit notes and softer peat smoke, adding a more experimental layer to our unmistakable Islay character.
